Update pt.2 I realize that the "Software Crisis" term has been around for a long time. The historical description I read describes the size/scale of the problems growing faster than our ability to (as humans) manage them. In the above post, and Douglas' talk, we look at how how this issue has expanded as the quality of software and our industry is being shaped by the commoditization of software development. I am sure that Friedrich Bauer wasn't too worried about iPhone apps 40+ years ago.

I have observed, in my own experience, that trusting on contract testers can be challenging and more time consuming IF you want them to run on large-scale integrating efforts. Whereas developers lean to come in and work merely on a small piece of the endeavor, testers normally are expected to test across functions, systems or business enterprise fields. If you can take in testers to work on smaller pieces of the project, thereby allowing for your more seasoned in-house testers to focus on the cross-domain effort, this could work.

As a side note, and comment directed to Douglas (if he so happens to read this). I thought the talk was excellent, and I wouldn't change anything about it. I just happen to hold a different opinion, though I certainly share your desire to see an improvement.
